Prehistory

Architectural and Interior designs have been around for millions of years. As time passes, more materials are available, allowing us to be more creative when designing artifacts or structures. The Stone Age was the start of a lot of architectural ideas it shows the development of humans in how we think of designs. Not only thinking about how a structure looks but also its purpose and usage.

Prehistoric Structures

During the Stone Age era, many versions of shelter were made like caves and huts. However, the ones that caught my eye were the pit houses

Pit Houses

During the Paleolithic Era, pit houses were one of the primary ways of living.

This type of shelter is created by digging a large hole underground and then using various materials like mammoth bones and tusks to surround the hole with a roof and protection from animals and weather conditions.

Stonehenge was a place of ritual with large stones having two concentric circle paths with openings aligned to the lunar and solar paths.

Lascaux Caves

Built in France the Lascaux Caves were a place that contained over 6,000 cave paintings of various animals and figures. There were so many drawings found deep inside the caves in difficult spots to get to they were rarely visited. It was said to be a place not for habitation rather it was a place for people to do ritual activities. There is one theory that the drawings reflect “sympathetic magic”, they were rituals that brought good luck to hunters

  1. Hey there! I really like that you mentioned the Pit houses! I hadn't considered them and I agree, they are fascinating. Especially how they would use mammoth bones and tusks to make it safer for weather and potential threats. I also find it interesting that the drawings of the caves were thought to bring good luck, its a fun little fact.
